A holiday cottage in the Lake District is great if you love mountains, lakes and views because it is Englands largest National Park and it has the highest mountain in England Scafell Pike and the deepest lake in England which is Wastwater, the lake district has 14 of the largest lakes in England although Bassenthwaite Lake is the only official lake as the rest are really ‘meres’ or ‘waters’, you can also find Roman ruins and stone circles in the area because people have lived there since the last ice age.

In the woodlands surrounding the lakes and waters you will see lots of wildlife such as birds of prey, deer, and even red squirrels, the Lake District National Park is England's largest National Park and covers 885 square miles that is 33 miles wide by 40 miles long, the deepest lake is Wastwater at 243 feet and the longest is Windermere which is ten and a half miles long, the 14 main lakes in order of size are Windermere, Ullswater, Derwentwater, Bassenthwaite, Coniston, Haweswater, Thirlmere, Ennerdale, Wastwater, Crummock Water, Buttermere, Grasmere, Loweswater and Rydal.

There is every chance that your holiday cottage in the lake district will be painted white this is because cottages used to be treated with red lead and limewashed which keeps out damp and turns white but nowdays they are just painted white to keep up the look, you will also see some grey sheep these are Hardwick sheep that were bought over by the Viking invaders, they are very hardy sheep and live well in these conditions.
